3 MAJOR US STOCK EXCHANGES

There are 3 major stock exchanges in the US: the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange), AMEX (American Stock Exchange) and NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers).

1. NYSE
The NYSE is the largest American stock exchange by volume and it lists companies from around the world.

2. AMEX
The AMEX is a smaller exchange than NYSE, and is typically favored by smaller companies which cannot meet NYSE's strict listing and reporting requirements.

3. NASDAQ
The NASDAQ is traditionally heavy with technology stocks, since the exchange was friendly to tech startups in the early days.

US STOCK MARKET INDEXES

In Singapore, we have the Straits Times Index (STI Index) as our most-widely used index.

In the US, the most broadly followed indexes are the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite. These indexes can be readily found on news websites such as CNBC, Bloomberg, Reuters, CNN, Market Watch. I generally like to use CNBC.

These indexes can also be easily found on our Online Trading Platform:

HOW TO SEARCH FOR A US STOCK

For example, you would like to add the stock Apple in your watchlist. Usually, through Google or Yahoo Finance, you will be able to see which US stock market it is trading in.

On the Lim & Tan platform, you can easily search via stock name or stock code. If you are unsure of the market, you can simply select All US Markets.

HOW TO PLACE ORDER

Placing order is similar to SG Market.
Find user guides here.

Some things to take note:
  • Settlement currency: You will have to choose the settlement currency, either USD or SGD (currency you want to pay or receive in). Default is USD.
  • Refrain from chasing prices: US stock prices move very fast, *blink your eyes* It is not recommended to chase prices, because the speed at which prices change is faster than the blink of your eyes. Hence, it is not recommended to cancel orders to change prices because sometimes your order can become fulfilled while you are trying to cancel it.
