Further to last week's post (Dividends Yield of China Financial Stocks), today we shall touch alittle more on the Hong Kong market. If you are starting to trade in the Hong Kong market, then you would sometimes come across this classification of "H-shares".
H-shares are shares issued by Chinese companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and can be bought or sold by foreigners. They are dominated in Hong Kong dollars but are still regulated by Chinese law. Sometimes, some companies may have listings simultaneously on both the HK market and one other Chinese Stock Exchange.
Whereas you may have heard of A-shares. A-shares are listed on the Shanghai exchange and are largely available only to domestic investors. Some A-shares are eligible for trading through the Shanghai-Hong Kong Connect. Please contact Lyndell if you wish to know more about trading via Shanghai-Hong Kong Connect.
In 2007, the Chinese government decided to allow mainland investors to invest in the Hong Kong exchange, which greatly increase the demand for H-shares, as mainland investors were previously forbidden from investing the exchange.
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange's website generated a list of H-Shares, of which China Construction Bank Corporation has the largest market capitalisation. The list includes most of the major economic sectors such as financials, industrials and utilities. Most of the H-shares listed in my post last week are financial stocks with large market capitalisation.
