Your CPF is a lifelong savings plan that aims to provide you with a secure retirement. The CPF can be used under several schemes, from retirement to housing, healthcare and investment.
About the CPF Investment Scheme (CPFIS):
Under the CPF Investment Scheme (CPFIS), you are able to invest your Ordinary Account (OA) and Special Acount (SA) savings in a variety of investments, which includes stocks and gold. If you are interested to know what are the options you can invest in, please click here. However, over here today, we will touch particularly on investment in stocks and gold.
You can invest under CPFIS, if you are at least 18 years old; are not an undischarged bankrupt; have more than $20,000 in your OA; and/or have more than $40,000 in your SA.
Opening a CPF Investment Account at the bank:
To invest, you would first need to open a CPF Investment Account with one of the following banks: OCBC, DBS or UOB. Each person should only have one CPF Investment Account in Singapore (having more than 1 will create confusion when selling stocks). Opening a CPF Investment account at the bank is liken to opening a bank account, but with the source of funds coming from your CPF Account.
Stock and Gold Limits:
From your OA, up to 35% of your investible savings can be invested in stock, while 10% of your investible savings can be invested in gold. "Investible savings" are computed based on some factors like amount withdrawn for investments and education. Click here to see an example of the computation for investible savings. The best way to check for the amount investible for stock and gold is to log in to CPF website via your SingPass to access my cpf Online Services - My Statement. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will be able to see your investible savings amount. Alternatively, you can also access CPF Tools on your iPhone using your SingPass; or visit any CPF Service Centres with your NRIC.
Under the stock category, the allowable products are Shares, Property Funds and Corporate Bonds. Most bluechip stocks that pay dividends are in the list. Click here to view the list.
Under the gold category, the allowable products are Gold ETFs and other Gold products (such as Gold certificates, Gold savings accounts and Physical Gold). Gold ETFs can be purchased via our trading channels.
Do note that both the stock and gold limits are exclusive of each other.
